Magazine or Tool Holder Makeover

About this Project:
On one of my many prowls through the thrift store, I came across a fairly beat up wooden carrier. It was missing a knob and a side panel, the plastic knobs were unappealing, and the stain was worn. You might be wondering why I purchased it at all. I did it because I saw the potential, and now you can do it to.

Materials List:
An old, beat up, wooden magazine or tool holder
Acrylic Paint
Less than a yard of material

Tools:
Ceramic or glass dish plate (to mix the paint on)
Scissors, Pins, Measuring tape
Sewing machine
Paint brush

The Knobs:
First thing was first, I had to make those terrible plastic knobs look better. So I covered them in material.

Making the Pattern:

All I did was wrap the material around the knob and then cut the material with about a ½ excess. I then used matching string to wrap the material several times, tie, and clip. I made sure that the flat side of the material was covering the hole for the screw to secure the knob. I used the scissors to poke a hole through the material.

Mixing the Paint:
You could try to purchase the perfect color straight off the shelf, but I find that i need more flexibility than that. I found the perfect green by blending brown, white, and green together.

Make the Pattern
To create the canvas covering I just measured the dimensions of the item, and then added another 1 inch so that I could hem all the edges. I then added another 2 inches to each side so that I would have room to fold them over and sew them into a tube that could slip right over the frame.
